Puppy Contracts
Basic Summary for both contracts:
– Health – Genetic defects are guaranteed, but environmental causes (over-feeding, joint over-use before growth plates have closed, Spaying or Neutering before 24 months, etc.) are not. We will work hard to place a puppy with an appropriate temperament, but as environment largely accounts for temperament, it is not guaranteed. Spaying and Neutering before 24 months of age will nullify any health guarantee.
– Right to first refusal = As breeders we wish to keep track of all our our puppies and ensure they do not end up on craigslist, eBay or in breeding mills. We insist on a “right to first refusal” which means that if the dog doesn’t work out or you can’t keep the dog for ANY reason, we must be offered the dog back first.
– Delayed Neuter/Spay – As breeders we want what is best for our puppies. Vizslas in particular appear to be susceptible to serious health issues including a three-fold increase in the chance of cancer associated with spay/neuter before 24 months of age. We would prefer spay/neuter only after 2 years of age after growth plates have fully closed, but our contract states 24 months is the absolute earliest.
– Co-ownership – We will co-own any dog that is sold.
Here are our sample contracts for both pet and show homes. We reserve the right to make minor adjustments to better reflect the home and puppy in question. We plan on writing newer, clearer contracts for 2015.
